The blessing of the animals is a popular fiesta
throughout Mexico and Central America. On January 17,
people decorate their chickens, ducks, pigs, oxen, dogs,
and other animals with flowers and ribbons and take them
to church to be
blessed.
In many villages, animal parades take place as well.
Some animals aredecorated with flowers, many are drapped
with colorful streamers, and a few are painted with food
coloring.
Colorful murals are painted in Mexico as part of the
blessing of the animals. The murals are usually full of
animal paintings.
Blessing of the Animals Prayer
O God, you have done all things wisely; in your goodness
you have made us in your image and given us care over
living things.
Reach out with your right hand and grant these animals
may serve our needs and that your bounty in the resources
of this life may move us and seek more confidently the
goal of eternal life.
